Suffocation of the flame is often the easiest method to extinguish small fires, because you usually have simple, improvised "extinguishers" readily available - such as blanket, jacket, pillow or the like. By choking off the flame prevents the fire receives oxygen and thus suppressed the fire enough that you get snuffed it.
However, remember that you can not smother the embers after a fire. After strangling of a fire in the wood, paper, cloth and similar combustible material, you must always lure with water to prevent the fire from flaring up again.
Fire Blanket
A fire blanket is made of non-combustible material. Fire blanket can be used to:
- Extinguishing small liquid fires
- Extinguishing small fires in the fiber material (remember after mitigation)
- Extinguishing smaller engine fires
- Protecting people against radiation heat
How-to
- Grasp the top edge of the carpet with an under hand grip so that your hands are protected.
- Protect your face. Keep up the carpet in front of the body as a shield, so you are protected against radiant heat and sparks while approaching flames.
- Place the blanket over the burning object, and wrap the blanket firmly around it.Beware of flames.
- Carefully lift a corner of the carpet and check if the flames are extinguished. Pull the carpet quiet of the way you put it on, you are protected by the carpet if the flames are completely extinguished.
